Thriller Opening Pitch on Prezi

Although this had helped for research, this task was only an exercise and this wasn't the chosen pitch for the final product. This task also was the first I had created on prezi.com and found it very useful.

Serial Killer Thriller - Thriller Convention

No Country For Old Men - Opening
We are shown a quick glimpse of the psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh in the opening scene of No Country for Old Men. He has recently been captured and is standing in a police station with a deputy, who is totally unaware of how vicious Chigurh is. Within minutes, the deputy is dead. We knew that this would happen because the person narrating was telling us the things Chigurh was capable of.


The directors of the movie have made it a really effective thriller as it has some of the main conventions a thriller needs like a narrative, a glimpse of the enemy/killer, it shows him killing and gives us a hint of what the film is about.


In this opening scene there is no music in the background, there's just a narrative with an overview of a dessert in what looks like Texas and then a scene in the police station where the camera slowly zooms into the officer on the phone, while we can see Chigurh escaping his handcuffs and eventually taking down the officer and killing him.

Narrative Expectations:
We see the main character flying on a parachute jumping into a car and flying out of a explosion!
It's a spoof start as the main character is Tom Cruise when it should be Mike Myers and the other characters are star studded when they shouldn't be!
It then cuts into the studio where we see the real Austin Powers suggesting that what we saw was a joke.
It then turns into a silly dance on the set.
The lead dancer is Mike Myers so we can suggest he is the main character.

Shot Types:
The first shot type is a rolling birds eye view of Tom Cruise POV from the sky on the parachute. This shows us this movie will have some action.
Then pans around the car which has no driver, with a number plate of 'SHAGUAR' suggesting to us this movie may be silly and a comedy.

Character Types:
The dance during the scene leads us to believe that Mike Myers will be the lead character as he's in the lead dancer.
However the start has us in shock as we see some A-List actors and a top director, we then realise it's a spoof and it cuts into the real thing where Mike Myers then takes the lead with the most speech and camera time.

Narrative Expectations:
We see the main character lying hurt on the floor with blood on her face looking like she has been in a brutal fight.
'Bill' wipes the blood off her face. We assume his name is Bill as it says it on the napkin he wipes her with.
From this we can understand that this may be a movie about revenge as the title suggests which is 'Kill Bill Vol 1'
We don't see Bill, from this I can interpret that Bill is mysterious and we may not see much of his face during the movie.

Shot Types:
There is only one shot type and that is a close up of The Bride lying on the floor with blood on her face.

Character Types:
We are made to believe that Bill is the 'bad guy' from the movie as the title is called 'Kill Bill Vol 1' and he's also the one to shoot The Bride.
We can also infer that The Bride wants revenge on Bill for shooting her.
Also we can understand that the movie will be very violent and graphic as the first scene involves a gun shot being fired and blood!
